Presented by Professor Hugh R. Taylor AC, from the Indigneous Eye Health Unit, Melbourne University, this public lecture advocates for increased spending on, and attention to, the issue of vision loss in Australia, and in the nation's Indigenous population, specifically.
Professor Taylor outlines the prevalence and significance of vision related problems, Australia-wide; and the costs and burden of eye disease. He makes the case that prevention, treatment and research are cost effective.
The work of the Indigenous Eye Health Unit (IEHU) in closing the gap in vision between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians is introduced. The lecture describes the current state of Indigenous eye health with a focus on trachoma, particularly:
