This handbook has been produced for all non-Indigenous family relationship service staff working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. The handbook includes information and practical advice that aims to support staff in strengthening their relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations.

A range of topics are covered in the handbook, such as:

• the social context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and families
• communication skills
• cultural protocols
• working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in culturally competent ways.

The handbook also includes information on undertaking research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, as well as a list of useful resources.

This handbook has been developed for non-Indigenous family relationship service staff however it would be a valuable resource for non-Indigenous workers working in a range of health-related areas. The information in this handbook would help non-Indigenous workers to engage with their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in culturally appropriate and respectful ways.
