Working with Aboriginal people and communities: a practice resource (2009)

Description

This booklet was produced for health and community service staff to improve service delivery to Aboriginal people. It contains key facts and information that aim to enhance the cultural awareness of these workers so they respond appropriately to the needs of Aboriginal people and communities.

The booklet is divided into three sections:

• section 1 - general information (e.g., historical overview and communication guide)
• section 2 - Aboriginal community consultation (e.g., understanding community structures)
• section 3 - resources (e.g., calendar of cultural events).

The resource was developed by the Aboriginal Services Branch of the NSW Department of Community Services, in consultation with the Aboriginal Reference Group.

When to use this resource

This resource is appropriate for any health or community service worker who provides care or other services to Aboriginal clients or communities. The resource aims to improve service delivery to Aboriginal people by increasing the cultural understanding and awareness of these workers.
