Perinatal depression protocol (PND): Maternal & Child Health Protocols (2010)

Description

This protocol provides information for health professionals on how to screen for and manage antenatal depression (AND) and postnatal depression (PND). It includes:

• questions to ask women at each antenatal visit
• definition of depression, including AND and PND
• information on risk factors for depression
• information on how to manage clients with AND and PND
• referrals within the Kimberley region.

The protocol also includes a version of the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale that has been adapted for use with Aboriginal populations.

When to use this resource

This protocol has been developed for health professionals working in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It should be used to screen for antenatal depression (AND) and postnatal depression (PND). It should also be used as a guide on how to care for clients with AND and PND.
