Doctors in Aboriginal Health [DVD and online video] (2007)

Description

This resource is a training video intended for General Practitioners and other practice staff working in Indigenous health. It is one of a set of four videos produced in 2002 by the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) with funding from Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA). Since their original production, the training videos have been remastered as DVDs and are now freely available on the website of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (see links below). The four videos in the series are:

Doctors in Aboriginal health

In this particular video, a group of doctors working in Aboriginal health share their experiences. The topics covered include:

• the real challenge of working in an environment where the doctor is not the centre of the service
• working in an environment that is both rewarding and satisfying
• gaining a first hand appreciation of a living dynamic culture
• the importance of the primary health care model in making a difference to the health status of a section of the Australian population with an enormous burden of disease
• primary health care and the range of public health programs available
• the challenge of using skills that doctors would not normally use in a 'healthy' population
• an opportunity to see diseases that are not the standard GP presentations
• the effects of government policies on Aboriginal health
• how to identify patients who are 'at risk' and introduce early interventions
• the role of traditional healers
• the relationship between GPs and Aboriginal Health Workers.
