Your heart, your bloodline, your choice aims to educate Aboriginal Western Australians about the link between diabetes and heart disease. It explores the impact lifestyle factors such as healthy eating, physical activity, smoking and stress have on disease progression.
Extensive consultation workshops and correspondence with Aboriginal people and health professionals from across Western Australia were conducted, to inform the development of the resource. The narrator's story is based on an Aboriginal woman's personal experience of diabetes and heart disease, whilst additional quotes are also experiences from Aboriginal people. Furthermore, the voice-overs for the animation were provided by Aboriginal people in Perth and the Kimberley regions.
Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet abstract
The animation is a tool designed to enhance the impact of an education session and stimulate discussion between health professionals and clients. It is ideal for use in either an individual or family setting as health is rarely an individual issue to Aboriginal people and therefore discussions should acknowledge the role of family.
The resource is available in two modes; USB and DVD. The DVD shows a continual version of the animation for display in waiting rooms whereas the USB consists of scene-by-scene breakdown of the animation along with an extensive range of supporting documents.
