Secretariat of National Aboriginal & Islander Child Care
North Fitzroy, Vic
Book
This resource was produced to support non-Indigenous family relationship services to develop culturally appropriate practice and services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. The resource provides ideas, information, tools, practical tips and encouragement. At the foundation of this resource is the importance of respect and adopting a strengths-based approach.
The publication hopes to represent the diversity and richness of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and cultures. However, there is acknowledgement that it cannot represent distinct cultural traditions and practices of individual communities. There is explanation that a one size approach does not fit all and what works well in one community will not always translate into success for another community. Communication, consultation and collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities will allow organisations to cater to the unique needs identified by communities. By working in partnership and consultation, organisations will develop more effective and sustainable programs because the community has a greater sense of ownership of services and programs. This resource highlights the need for meaningful and sustained partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
