A journey into the Queensland forensic mental health system: Indigenous resource kit (2008)

Description

This resource kit aims to increase awareness among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people about how the Queensland forensic mental health system works.

The resources that make up this kit contain artwork by members of the Yarrabah community in Queensland. The kit is linked to a website about the forensic mental health system in Queensland and includes the following resources:

• a DVD with the story of a young Indigenous male charged with an offence when mentally unwell
• five fact sheets covering issues, such as violence and mental illness, and mental health court decisions
• flow charts which provide a map of forensic mental health processes in Queensland
• a poster titled A journey into the Queensland forensic mental health system, designed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists
• a suggestions sheet which provides ideas on how to use the kit.

When to use this resource

This kit would be a useful resource for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have contact with the Queensland forensic mental health system as it would help them to understand what happens to someone who has a mental illness who has been charged with an offence.
