The High intensity violent offending program consists of two components: the Cognitive self change program and the Making choices program (separate Making choices programs are available for men and women). The High intensity violent offending program, through these two components, aims to reduce the likelihood of violent re-offending in high risk violent offenders.
The first treatment component, the Cognitive self change program, addresses the thinking patterns, attitudes and beliefs which support, promote or precipitate violent behaviour. Participants learn to recognise non-violent ways of responding to situations, internal states, people or events. The Cognitive self change program should always be completed before referral to the Making choices program.
The second treatment component, the Making choices program, addresses outstanding criminogenic needs related to violent offending. The Making choices program targets general offending behaviour using treatment methods such as:
By assisting offenders accept responsibility and become personally and socially accountable for their behaviour the program aims to reduce an individual's risk of recidivism.
