Overview

The overall aim of the Younger people with disability in residential aged care (YPIRAC) program was to reduce the numbers of younger people with disability living in nursing homes throughout Western Australia (WA).

The three key objectives of the program were to:

• move younger people with disability in residential aged care into appropriate supported disability accommodation
• divert future admissions of younger people with disability from residential aged care into more appropriate forms of accommodation
• enhance the delivery of specialist disability services to those younger people with disability who chose to remain in residential aged care, or where residential care was the only suitable option.

The YPIRAC program was a joint initiative of the WA Disability Services Commission and the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. It was implemented in July 2006 and ran for five years.
