Overview

The aim of the Oongkalkada landfill project was to minimise contamination of the environment through the following activities:

• erect a vermin proof fence to enclose the community landfill and safely contain waste
• install large receptacle and compost bins to use as community recycling/re-use collection
• provide storage outlets to recycle organic, packaging and synthetic waste
• minimise waste to landfill
• produce signage to identify bins
• inform the community of the recycling project.

The plans to erect a vermin proof fence did not occur due to funding issues but the fencing will still be completed in the future in stages.

A community awareness campaign used posters and public workshops to inform the wider community and visitors of the recovery program to re-use organic waste as well as packaging and as many synthetic products as possible.
