Overview

Red Dust Role Models is a non-profit health promotion charity and deductible gift recipient that seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of disadvantaged youth in remote communities. Red Dust Role Models' Lifestyle education program uses the unique combination of sport, art, drama, dance, and music as its mediums for conveying healthy lifestyle messages. The program encourages healthy lifestyle decisions and promotes education as a path to personal development, employment and readiness for community leadership.

The program delivers activities that aim to complement existing health promotion programs and assist school teachers, healthcare workers and community leaders to encourage healthy lifestyle decisions by:

• highlighting the dangers of drug, alcohol and other substance abuse
• setting examples of healthy eating, good nutrition and proper hydration
• encouraging participation in physical exercise and sport
• teaching and modeling good hygiene practices
• addressing specific issues identified by individual communities
• raising funds for infrastructure projects
• partnering with community leaders, health and education professionals to launch new programs and initiatives
• highlighting the importance of education as a pathway to greater opportunities.

The Lifestyle education program is a four or five-day residential program using a combination of education-based classroom sessions, sport activities, coaching clinics, music workshops and art/drama sessions to actively engage youth. Positive lifestyle messages are reinforced throughout the program, while games and activities are designed to allow the participants to have fun while learning. Community programs are designed to culminate with a community celebration involving the participants showcasing their achievements through a music performance or other activity. Special awards and acknowledgements are made, and community relationships are strengthened through sharing food, fun and pride in the achievements of their youth.
