The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay, sistergirl and transgender HIV/AIDS sexual health project

Overview

The Australian Federation of AIDS Organisation (AFAO) established The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay, sistergirl, and transgender HIV/AIDS sexual health project out of response to recommendations arising from the first National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Gay Men, Sistergirl, Transgender Sexual Health Conference called Anwernekenhe.

The AFAO Indigenous project seeks to address the challenges of HIV/AIDS and sexual health in Australia. Input and guidance for the project is provided by key stakeholders in each state and territory.

To date the project has produced a range of key innovative resources such as: a booklet titled "HIV/AIDS and Us Mob" which focuses on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with HIV; an antidiscriminatory campaign addressing access to health services; and self esteem and pride resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sistergirls.
