Overview

The aim of this project was to support mainstream health providers in providing culturally appropriate palliative care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Funded by the Commonwealth Government as part of the National palliative care program, this program was the result of recommendations made in the National Indigenous palliative care needs study. The specific goals of this project were:

to ensure that mainstream services had the resources required to educate health workers in providing culturally sensitive palliative care to Indigenous Australians
to ensure that mainstream palliative care services could sensitively and flexibly adapt to the needs of Indigenous people with a life-limiting illness
to ensure that Indigenous people were aware of services offered by mainstream palliative care services
to ensure that Indigenous people were confident that mainstream services could offer a range of care options for those who had a life-limiting illness.

Boab Health Services

The Department of Health and Ageing and Boab Health Services in Broome engaged Inception Strategies to develop this poster on palliative care. The poster was produced as part of the National Indigenous palliative care project, and aims to highlight the importance of advanced care planning with Indigenous clients. The concept for this poster was developed during a comic book workshop with Aboriginal women at Boab Health Services, the end product of which will be released in 2012.

information on culturally appropriate palliative care services for Indigenous Australians
information on how practices can create these culturally appropriate services and spaces.

This resource helps to operationalize the findings, making them usable and relevant to practitioners and palliative care organisations.
