NPA suicide prevention strategy

Overview

The Dr Edward Koch Foundation provided an intensive suicide prevention program in the Cape York Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) under an agreement with the Cape Police, Citizens and Youth Welfare Centre (PCYC) Indigenous Business Unit. Delivery of the program to the five Indigenous communities of the NPA (Bamaga, Umagico, Seisia, Injinoo and New Mapoon) aimed to provide a network of care against the risk of suicide.

The program involved conducting Life workshops, counselling services, ensuring the sustainability of the program by training Life community carers, the provision of local resources specific to each community, and the Life bereavement support service.

Twelve Life community carers have been working voluntarily within their communities helping those at risk of suicide and self-harm. They receive backup support from the foundation's Life team.
