Overview

The Healthy under 5 kids (HU5K) program aims to support the physical, cognitive, psychosocial and behavioural development of Indigenous children in the Northern Territory by enhancing the interaction between primary health care workers and the parents/carers of children being treated.

The key element of the program is a series of age specific child health checks designed to facilitate the prevention, early detection intervention and treatment of common conditions that cause morbidity and early mortality, as well as prompting early referral for the management of more serious or chronic conditions.

The HU5K program health checks enable:

• assessment of growth and development, as well as physical, psychological and social well-being
• provision of advice and education and the opportunity to discuss any concerns the parent/carer may have
• identification of children and/or families who may need support
• adherence to the childhood vaccination schedule
• early detection and treatment of health or developmental problems, and referral of the child as required.
