Overview

The Islanders Board of Industry and Service (IBIS) is a not for profit Queensland Government Statutory Board which operates 17 retail stores and employs 150 staff in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula (Cape York) region.

Healthy eating healthy life is an ongoing educational program designed to promote healthy food choices and the benefits of exercise to the people of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula region and to the communities serviced by IBIS' retail stores. The goals of the program include:

• healthy cooking demonstrations, nutrition education sessions, games, and store tours
• employing store nutritionists and educating senior store management on healthy foods to ensure appropriate foods are stocked
• using a system of 'badges' to identify healthy food and drink items
• forming partnerships with local schools, Indigenous Health Workers, childcare centres, women's organisations and sporting groups
• publishing a range of recipes for healthy meals cooked with products that are readily available and affordable.
