It's your choice, now! is a project developed by Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District, Barnardo's South Coast Children and Family Centre, and Beyond Empathy. The project was aimed at young Indigenous people, to encourage development of new skills, and to attempt to address tobacco use through the medium of film creation.
The high density public housing estate of Bundaleer, in New South Wales, was chosen as the focus point for this project, as it was identified as a place with extreme poverty and social disadvantage. Of this community, 60% of families are single parent households, 89% of residents are dependent on Centrelink benefits, and a significant proportion identify as Aboriginal.
The project's vision was to increase the resilience of young people, in order to prevent the commencement of tobacco smoking. Two film clips were produced as part of the project, which were launched at a local cinema, as well as through Facebook and Youtube. The advertisements, which are now being used as a resource tool in workshops to help engage youth, highlighted the themes of:
