East Arnhem community night patrol and sobering-up services



East Arnhem Shire Council run a community night patrol service and sobering-up shelter for the nine East Arnhem Land communities. The services are delivered in response to the need for culturally appropriate assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at risk of either causing harm or being harmed, including:

The services assist communities to take responsibility in preventing anti-social, harmful, destructive and illegal behaviour by offering patrolling and safe transport. The activities undertaken by the night patrol teams include:

The Council also run a sobering-up shelter in Nhulunbuy, which assists the patrol teams by helping clients who are intoxicated and a potential threat to the community and/or themselves.
