The Healthy smiles: oral health and fluoride varnish information for health professionals program aims to provide oral health background information, knowledge about early childhood caries, and information on the prevention and management of oral disease to non-oral health professionals. The program includes training sessions and a manual that outlines information and procedures for registered nurses and registered Aboriginal Health Workers on to apply fluoride varnish in primary health care settings in the Northern Territory. This program is part of the Northern Territory oral health promotion plan which aims to make oral health part of primary healthcare.
Nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers in the NT who are involved in the provision of Well Child Health Checks are encouraged to attend a Healthy smiles workshop to obtain skills associated with oral health assessment, anticipatory guidance and application of fluoride varnish.

The Healthy smiles: oral health and fluoride varnish information for health professionals resource was developed as part of the Northern Territory oral health promotion plan (NTOHPP) which included the integration of oral health into primary health care. This resource is to be used in conjunction with a fluoride varnish training program. It was designed to provide non-oral health professionals with some oral health background information, knowledge about early childhood caries as well as prevention and management. It aims to provide adequate skills for registered nurses and registered Aboriginal Health Workers to apply fluoride varnish in primary health care settings of the NT.
