Therapeutic journeys: counselling Aboriginal clients and their families (2002)

Description

This DVD has been developed for health or drug workers counselling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients with drug or alcohol problems. It demonstrates evidence-based best practice in alcohol or other drug-related counselling for clients and their families. The DVD features three counselling session involving a drunk driver, his adolescent children and a family session. The sessions show a range of counselling skills including:

• gender and cultural issues
• an approach that is sensitive to family needs
• general counselling skills including
  • listening skills
  • empathy (showing feelings)
    
  • questions to use and when to use them
    
  • summarising and reflecting on the feelings expressed by clients
    
• assessment
• motivational interviewing
• goal setting and harm reduction for clients.

The DVD was produced by Sushi Productions and is accompanied by a set of training notes. Information is provided for trainers running workforce development programs.

When to use this resource

This resource is a valuable tool for health practitioners (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander or non Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) who work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients with alcohol or other drug-related problems. It will assist practitioners in developing their counselling skills which may improve the health and wellbeing outcomes for their clients. It could also be used as an educational tool for training programs involving drug and other health workers.
