The Dental Health Education Unit (DHEU) is a unit within Dental Health Services, Department of Health WA, that operates as an information and resource centre with the purpose of promoting dental health across the State.
The DHEU offers current information on oral health issues and advice on a wide range of dentally related topics. The DHEU also assists in the planning, promotion and implementation of dental health programmes.
A variety of resources such as pamphlets, fact sheets, posters and booklets, covering a broad range of dental topics and target groups, are available in limited numbers at no cost. Target groups include Indigenous peoples and special needs groups. These resources are listed in the Dental health education unit resource catalogue which is updated annually.
'User-friendly' teaching materials are available for loan to people in Western Australia conducting dental health programmes. These include large hand puppets, dental health static displays, flashcard kits, videos/DVDs, flipcharts, tooth models/large toothbrushes, photo series and children's books that have a dental theme. These are also listed in the Dental health education unit resource catalogue.
All the above resources are only available to people living in Western Australia.
The DHEU has produced online lesson plans that include activity sheets and dental experiments using the Curriculum Framework as a guide. These can be downloaded from the DHS website. These are suitable for children from pre-primary to year seven. Staff from the DHEU are available to provide presentations at 'train the trainer' level upon request.
