South West Aboriginal Medical Service
Description
The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) provides a health care service to Nyoongar people in the south-west of Western Australia. SWAMS is a Nyoongar community controlled health organisation, founded on the principles of self determination, empowerment and freedom of choice. The aim of the organisation is to:
- ensure that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community have access to a holistic, culturally sensitive and relevant medical service
- provide services that offer support, care and education
- assist in bridging the gap between cultural and mainstream services
- ensure that the communities have a right to participate in decision-making about the provision of medical services.
Health programs provided by SWAMS include:
- men's health
- women's health
- asthma
- diabetes
- heart health
- child and maternal health
- drugs and alcohol
- mental health.
