The Lions Eye Institute (LEI) is a not-for-profit organisation with the mission to achieve excellence in scientific research and clinical practice to prevent blindness. It relies heavily on community support including the continued generosity of Lions Clubs state-wide to fund vital equipment, scholarships and fellowships.
LEI has a comprehensive ophthalmic facility, housing the Lions Eye Institute clinical services, the Laser Vision Centre, the Day Surgery Centre, The Lions Eye Bank of WA, Lion Optics and the Lion Save-Sight Foundation (LSSF).
LEI conducts scientific research into blindness across a broad spectrum of diseases, with a particular focus on the genetic basis of disease, broadly categorised into the following areas:
