Overview

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) health promotion grants program (formerly Healthpact) works to achieve a vision of a healthy, vital, sustainable ACT community by providing funding for health promotion projects. The majority of available funds are provided to community organisations to undertake projects to promote healthy living in a healthy environment, having a healthy community, and being healthy people.

The grants program has a significant focus on priorities under the National chronic disease strategy, the Council Of Australian Government's (COAG) National partnership agreement on preventive health, and the ACT Health's A healthy future - preventative health budget initiative 2009 -12. Priorities include:

• physical activity
• healthy nutrition
• mental health promotion
• environmental sustainability and health
• risk factors for chronic disease including
  • smoking
  • harmful alcohol consumption
  • physical inactivity
  • excess weight
  • stress or mental disorders
• targeting people who are at risk of ill-health from long term disadvantage
• working with the four messages
  • smoking prevention
  • water as the drink of choice
  • healthy nutrition
  • physical activity (these four messages are compulsory with sponsorship funding and optional for grants funding).
