Overview

The Commonwealth scholarships program (formally known as the Commonwealth learning scholarships program) was introduced in 2004 and provides financial support to eligible Indigenous students to assist with the costs associated with higher education. There are two scholarships; one for general education costs and one for accommodation costs.

These scholarships:

• target Indigenous students from low socio-economic status backgrounds
• do not count as income for any social security income tests
• will be awarded to eligible students on a competitive basis and
• do not need to be repaid by the student

In addition, there are the Indigenous access scholarships, a once in a lifetime scholarship available to Indigenous students to assist them to access higher education. These scholarships are aimed at commencing students undertaking approved enabling courses.

Application details: Potential applicants need to direct their enquiries on application procedures, deadlines, etc to the higher education provider where they are studying or plan to study.
