6th Australasian drug and alcohol strategy conference

The Australasian drug and alcohol strategy conference (ADASC) is the peak police drug and alcohol forum in Australasia and brings together experts from national and international law enforcement agencies, health service providers, policy analysts, academics, researchers and industry representatives. It provides an opportunity to share experiences between policing jurisdictions, develop and foster effective inter-agency partnerships, showcase research, and highlight practices and initiatives that are proving effective in combating drug and alcohol harms in the community.

This year's theme of 'creating connections: sharing experiences' signifies the co-operation between law enforcement, other government organisations and the drug and alcohol field in Australasia. Also, this theme demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement agencies to work in partnership in order to develop effective strategies to minimise the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol in the community.

ADASC 2013 will reflect on the creation of the National Drug Strategy with the Hon Dr Neal Blewett AC, who was Health Minister at the time of the establishment of the strategy, confirmed to deliver the opening plenary. The program will feature an alcohol licensing stream including responsible service of alcohol, patron responsibility and behaviour, liquor precinct approaches and the role of technology in licensed premises security systems.

For those with an interest in the policing of illicit drugs, emerging psychoactive substances will be receiving particular attention in the conference program. We will examine the opportunities and challenges facing law enforcement in dealing with the changing role of the internet as a supply chain, social network and enabler of drug crime.
