Overview

The masterclass will be a focused discussion on the links between parks and human health, and the ways in which these links can be harnessed more effectively to deliver better outcomes for our people and parks. The masterclass will be led by Dr Rob Grenfell and a panel of representatives from across the health, community and environment sectors. This workshop will discuss how the 'parks and health' story has developed in recent years, outline the essential elements for developing effective programs, and examine how parks agencies and health representatives can work together to raise their joint issue profile and subsequently achieve better outcomes for people and parks. It will predominantly focus on practical implementation of 'parks and health' programs, and the opportunities and challenges such programs can encounter.

Key aspects of the masterclass will include:

• an outline of recent history of 'parks and health' programs, particularly since the healthy parks, health people congress. This will include the panellist's own experiences and the lessons they have learnt to date
• a discussion of the 'essential elements' for successfully implementing 'parks and health' programs, including outlining the roles of parks agencies, health organisations and ongoing facilitation processes
• a case study activity, to examine how the group's knowledge and experience fits with the above principles in practice. This process will also reveal the challenges and obstacles that need to be overcome in the implementation of 'parks and health' programs
• opportunities to network with a broad range of representatives from relevant sectors, to establish shared values and common goals, and to develop partnerships that will ideally lead to joint 'parks and health' initiatives after the conference
