The publication examines how nutrition programs can best work to close the health gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their non-Indigenous counterparts. The report provides evidence-based recommendations about what works in relation to food and nutrition programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It also discusses how to develop and implement Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander food and nutrition programs in an effective and appropriate manner.

The resource was produced by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) Indigenous Nutrition Interest Group.

Healthy Food Charter: creating a vibrant healthy eating culture.

The Healthy Food Charter is a guide for all those working in partnership with the Victorian Government to improve the health of Victorians through food. The guide can be used by health professionals and educators, communities, food industries and businesses. The charter contains five principles:

  • how to promote easy healthy foods
  • how to promote fresh health foods
  • how to promote a balance of healthy foods
  • how to provide and promote healthy foods
  • how to be connected with healthy foods.

The charter has been developed using the 2013 National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Dietary guidelines for Australians and other key documents.

The Get up and grow Indigenous specific resources have been developed in consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, childcare professionals and educators from urban, rural and remote locations in Australia in collaboration with the Australian Government Department of Health.

These resources are designed to be used in a wide range of early childhood settings by families, staff and carers in the promotion of healthy food and physical activity to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

The six full colour posters include information on:

  • less is best for screen-time
  • water: a healthy and essential drink
  • your baby's first foods
  • learning through active play
  • finding new flavours
  • travel the active way.

Healthy lifestyle programs for physical activity and nutrition.

This report assesses the evidence regarding the effectiveness of physical activity and nutrition intervention programs in reducing the incidence of chronic diseases in Indigenous communities. The report also describes the burden of lifestyle-related chronic diseases (diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease) affecting Indigenous Australians and assesses strategies that have the potential to be affective.

The authors conclude from the evidence that healthy lifestyle programs can help to combat lifestyle-related chronic diseases. In particular, the programs that were found to be most effective were community-based projects that were initiated and managed by the communities in which they were run. Individual, family and group-based Indigenous healthy lifestyle projects were found to have positive effects in the short term (up to two years). It is not known whether these effects are sustained in the long term as few programs have both the resources and impetus to continue long term.

The Women's Development Project: Indigenous Australia Program: evaluation report.

This evaluation report presents findings from the Women's development project (WDP) which began in 2008. The goal of the WDP was to increase self-determination of women in the Jawoyn region, with key objectives to increase: networking and communication; capacity building in communities; opportunities for livelihoods; and partnership building and sharing of knowledge.

The evaluation was conducted by an external consultant appointed by the Fred Hollows Foundation and covered four communities in the Jawoyn region including Manyallaluk, Barunga, Wugularr, and Bulman.

Findings from the evaluation were that significant progress had been made towards the WDP's goal for increased self-determination; and that the communities had the capacity to further strengthen their goals. The WDP was also found to be meeting stated objectives through best practice and contributing towards a sustainable environment.

The evaluation included recommendations for The Fred Hollows Foundation, the Jawoyn Association and Jawoyn Communities, and other stakeholders.
