Inaugural WA alcohol and other drug excellence award winners announced

The inaugural Western Australian (WA) alcohol and other drug (AOD) excellence awards winners were recently announced by Mental Health Minister, Helen Morton.

Minister Morton, presenting the awards at the WA drug and alcohol conference, said the AOD sector was a shining example of collaboration and partnership.

'I am always struck by the dedication, commitment and genuine passion I find in the people who work in the alcohol and other drug sector, even in the most troubling and trying of circumstances,' Minister Morton said.

'The work that these people do is not easy, and it is not always immediately rewarding, as we know there is no quick fix for preventing or responding to substance use problems and dependence.'

The 2012 award winners, by category, were:

• Treatment - Cyrenian House's Saranna women and children's program
• Aboriginal - Wheatbelt Aboriginal Health Service's No more nyumree project
• Capacity building - Department of Corrective Services' Drug and alcohol training for DCS workforce
• Partnership - Palmerston Association, South Metro Community Drug Service, and South Metropolitan Mental Health Service partnership between AOD and mental health services in the South Metropolitan Area
• Local communities - Local Drug Action Groups Incorporated
• Families - Palmerston Association's Family program
• Young people - Perth Children's Court Drug court
• Prevention - Drug and Alcohol Office and Cancer Council of WA's Alcohol think again campaign
• Prevention - McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth.
