Date posted: 12 July 2012

The Department of Indigenous Affairs (DIA) recently released a new framework for its operation and policy for the next two years.

The Department of Indigenous Affairs: strategic framework 2012-2014 was launched on 28 June 2012 by the Minister for Education, Energy, and Indigenous Affairs, Peter Collier. The framework is designed to meet the contemporary needs of Aboriginal people, and focuses on four priority areas:

'With this framework in place, we will take significant steps toward addressing the problems within these four key priority areas over the next two years,' the Minister said.

DIA will focus on a range of key projects, including the divestment of Aboriginal land back to Aboriginal people, regulatory reform of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972, and undertake governance and leadership training through partnerships and joint ventures. The framework has received support from the Western Australian Aboriginal Advisory Council, the Aboriginal Lands Trust, the Aboriginal Cultural Material Committee, and the Aboriginal Affairs Coordinating Committee.
