The New South Wales town of Kempsey has implemented a social inclusion program for its youth to help reduce substance use and criminal activity. The Midnight basketball program now attracts a large proportion of young Aboriginal people aged 12-18 years, who might otherwise be out on the streets.
Midnight basketball is a national program that helps youth identify and embrace positive opportunities, by encouraging community building and social activities. The program combines health promotion activities, nutrition, physical activity and life skills workshops along with the basketball games that are its namesake.
The first Midnight basketball program was launched in Redfern, Sydney, in 2007, and later nationally due to its success.
