Traditional knowledge the key to food security: academics say

A delegation of academics from South Asia has visited Alice Springs to promote and learn about links between traditional knowledge and food security.

The group of 20 people from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka were part of a Monash University fellowship program that aims to reduce hunger by preserving traditional knowledge of food sources and food cultivation. People from communities in Central Australia wanted to share knowledge and discover synergies between traditional Aboriginal culture and Indigenous knowledge from the South Asian region.

Dr Jagjit Plahe, convenor of Monash University's food security group said the importance of the link between old knowledge and ensuring people have food was best evidenced by modern food shortages. 'It became apparent that even though we have all of these technologies in the world today, the reality is that in 2008 the number of hungry people increased beyond 1 billion.' Dr Plahe said the increasing number of hungry people pushed agencies like the United Nations to look at the role of Indigenous knowledge and traditional food. 'We are finding that where traditional knowledge is being revived, food security outcomes are better,' said Dr Plahe.
