Cut Indigenous smoking with high prices: Gooda

Date posted: 16 March 2011

The Federal Government is facing pressure to further increase the tobacco excise to help reduce smoking in Indigenous communities. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Mick Gooda has addressed the National Press Club on the progress made in closing the gap on Indigenous health, stressing that the most important thing that needs to be done is to reduce the number of Indigenous people smoking - and evidence shows that making cigarettes more expensive has an impact.
