Commonwealth response to The hidden toll: suicide in Australia report

Date posted: 30 November 2010

The Australian Government has released its response to the Senate inquiry into suicide in Australia - The hidden toll: suicide in Australia which was released in June this year. The Senate report included 42 recommendations and the Government has already made significant progress in implementing many of these recommendations, including a commitment to develop an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander suicide prevention strategy to address the significantly higher rate of suicide in the Indigenous population compared with the non-Indigenous population. Mental health has been identified as an important second-term agenda item for the Government with the Government committing an additional $274 million over four years to the Taking action to tackle suicide package and investing $23.8 million to the National suicide prevention program in 2010-2011.
