Legislation has been passed today in Parliament that will help encourage an estimated 87,000 Australians to quit smoking. Cutting smoking rates is a key part of the Government's plans to deliver better health and better hospitals for all Australian families and to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. On 30 April the excise on tobacco products was increased by 25 per cent through a 12 month order issued by the Government. This legislation has made the change permanent.
