There is a large gap between Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous smoking rates, 50% and 16% respectively. The Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon explains that anti-tobacco programs will be implemented firstly in 20 regions from the month of July with 40 more to follow. A specific workforce will be established for the set of programs, including tobacco action workers and healthy lifestyle workers who will be deployed across the country. Women who smoke will be the main target of this strategy as smoking is a risk factor for premature births, low birth-weight, perinatal deaths, including still birth and SIDS.
