Senior health workers to complete the nationally accredited training

Date posted: 4 April 2013

The Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) through their Hospital skills program are rolling out training in the Health workforce training (HWA) and assessment project.

The HWA training and assessment project aims to train 100 senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers to complete the nationally accredited VET Certificate IV in Training and Assessment by July 2014.

The training will help empower the role of qualified on-site mentors and assessors to support future students in health services. In addition it will facilitate supervision and assessment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers undertaking training.

The training is open to senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers employed by an Aboriginal community controlled health organisation, an Aboriginal medical service, the private sector or in a government health service.

The first round of training started in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, in January, and is being progressively rolled out to other states over the coming months.

The training and assessment project was launched in response to HWA's Growing our future report, which cited the need to develop and implement different options to improve the accessibility and flexibility of training delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers.

It is part of an HWA program that aims to enhance the impact that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers have on improving the health outcomes of the community.
