The Board of Inquiry into the Child Protection System in the Northern Territory (NT) was appointed by the Chief Minister in December 2009 to review the child protection system and make recommendations to strengthen and improve the system. This report presents the findings and recommendations of this Inquiry. The report begins by outlining the context of service delivery in the NT and how the current child protection system operates, before going on to present findings and recommendations.

The key finding of the inquiry is that child protection in the NT requires substantial organisational reform, including developing a collaborative approach across government departments and relevant local community development programs. Staffing was identified as a core area in need of improved resources in both statutory child protection and out of home care services. Finally the report places special emphasis on how the needs of Indigenous children, families and communities might be best met by the child protection system.
