Respiratory and sleep health in Indigenous Australians.

This report details the burden of respiratory and sleep symptoms in Indigenous Australians for the purpose of identifying and making recommendations on healthcare goals and strategies to improve respiratory health among this group. The report describes the prevalence, mortality and morbidity of acute and chronic respiratory disease and sleep disorders in Indigenous Australians and discusses specific disease issues. The report also investigates existing health service resources and includes case studies of Indigenous patients with respiratory and sleep health problems.

To conclude, the paper presents a strategic framework for respiratory and sleep health care, a summary of the major issues relating to respiratory and sleep health and offers recommendations on how to reduce premature deaths and morbidity of chronic respiratory disease in Indigenous Australians. The report was commissioned by the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, the Australasian Sleep Association and the Australian Lung Foundation.
