Development of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health Practitioners section

Development of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health Practitioners section is being undertaken by the enHealth Working Group on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health (WGATSIEH) in partnership with Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet. Its content is being guided by a national Focus Group, consisting of an informal network of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander environmental health practitioners (ATSIEHPs).

The need for better information and resources

The need for a sound evidence base for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health Practitioners was recognised by the enHealth Working Group on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health (WGATSIEH), which delegated the Western Australian Department of Health's Environmental Health Directorate to investigate how to develop such an evidence base and make it readily accessible to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health Practitioners.

Sharing information and practice

One of the major recommendations arising from the 6th National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health Conference was the establishment of an Association for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health Practitioners. It was agreed to begin the process by exploring options to enhance communication and linkages between delegates and other Indigenous environmental health practitioners across Australia.

Work has since been underway to build a web resource dedicated to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health Practitioners, including up-to-date information and networking opportunities online.

This web resource is one component of efforts to enable effective communication links between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health Practitioners across the country.
