Road map II: a strategic framework for improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through research.

Canberra: National Health and Medical Research Council

Road Map II is a strategic framework for improving health among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through research. Road Map II will be used by the NHMRC''s Research Committee to identify research topics requiring priority funding. This framework can be used by researchers to develop proposals to apply for funding under the NHMRC call for Research in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

Effective research is that which highlights positive social participation, the barriers to this participation being poverty and psychosocial stress. The underlying principles for Road Map II research are:

  • Health is a whole of life view construct embracing the life, death, life concept;
  • The development, conduct and communication of research requires the involvement of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community;
  • To support effective capacity exchange requires communication of research plans, progress and results;
  • Ethical research that has practical application and value to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their service providers;
  • Enhancing the capacity of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce by developing skills and knowledge; and
  • Identifying exemplars of best practice or models of success.

Road Map II research activities will be required to have an action orientated purpose and/or be linked to the community-capacity building goals of existing primary health care service delivery agencies. Researchers are also required to include research translation activities within their proposals.
