This report was prepared by the National Advisory Committee on Oral Health (NACOH). It builds on the work of an earlier report, Oral health of Australians: national planning for oral health improvement: final report in 2001. It also draws on the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander oral health workshop: workshop report and action plan which was released by the Department of Health and Ageing in 2003. Action area six contains information about the oral health of Indigenous Australians.

This report aims to provide an understanding of the state of oral health in Australia, the deficiencies in oral health status and the service delivery system, and the opportunities for improvement. National planning for improvement to oral health must be evidence-based so that the goals of improving of the dental health and dental care to all Australians can be realised. This report contains information on the oral health of Indigenous Australians as well as the wider population.
