This resource contains information on healthy eating and drinking and how to be active everyday, with a special focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of healthy eating and physical activity for those people who want to be healthy, especially for those people living with diabetes.

The first part of the booklet looks at what people eat and drink, the good and bad choices, how much people should eat and drink and the nutritional value of food. It has sections on healthy cooking and ideas for healthy meals. The second part of the booklet focuses on physical activity and the types of activities people can do to get fitter, healthier and stronger. It also provides tips on how to be safe when being active.

What to eat: staying healthy for you and your family can be used in conjunction with the Queensland Health publication Diabetes and strong families which has more information about diabetes.

When to use this resource

The What to eat booklet is designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have type 2 diabetes or a family history of type 2 diabetes. It is not only helpful for people with the disease but all community members as it promotes physical activity and healthy eating. It is also a useful resource for health workers.
