In 2004, the Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council (SA) Inc. (ADAC) was approached by the Department of Health and Ageing to redevelop the Alcohol and your health: Australian alcohol guidelines to make them more culturally appropriate for Indigenous communities.

After a number of workshops in remote, rural and urban settings with Indigenous drug, alcohol and health workers we were able to adapt and reproduce the guidelines in a more appropriate form.

The Alcohol Education Rehabilitation Foundation gave ADAC a small grant to enable us to print these resources and also to develop a flipchart to compliment the package. The Alcohol and your health: Australian alcohol guidelines for Indigenous communities goes through all 12 guidelines. These have been written in the first person so that health workers and drug and alcohol workers can read the information directly to their clients.

Also included is the alcohol screen (AUDIT), which the health workers and/or drug and alcohol workers can use in their dealings with clients. There is also a copy of what is a standard drink, a handout on alcohol can cause health problems, a quick A4 guide to the guidelines, and a A4 handout for health workers and drug and alcohol workers can use with both male and female clients so they can together work out what, if any problems the clients drinking is causing.
