Description

The Big Rivers and Katherine landfill operating manual is a practical guide for remote landfills in the Katherine and Big River regions of the Northern Territory (NT). The manual follows on from the Central Australian remote landfill operating manual, which covers the Barkly, MacDonnell and Central Desert Regional Councils.

The manual is specifically aimed at existing landfills located in communities of less than 1000 people, where a licence is presently not required.

The document is a guide intended to assist council managers, works supervisors and field staff to implement effective change at their landfill sites. The framework outlined in the manual applies to remote landfills, and will assist in long term improvements and functionality that will keep landfills operating well.

The manual additionally helps put in place training for staff and ongoing management principles that will assist local councils in the task of maintaining healthy and effective landfill sites.

The manual was developed by the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT) as part of the Big Rivers Region Waste Management Project.
