Description

These guidelines provide recommendations for mental health practitioners on how to work with children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced traumatic events as well as those who have developed acute stress disorder (ASD) or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The guidelines are comprehensive and cover the following content areas:

The guidelines are based on best practice evidence and were developed with input from a multidisciplinary team of health practitioners, such as: trauma experts; psychiatrists; psychologists; general practitioners; and social workers.

When to use this resource

These guidelines are appropriate for a range of mental health practitioners who work in a variety of clinical settings providing treatment to children, adolescents, and adults affected by trauma. Practitioners should use this resource as a guide only because the client's preferences and personal situation must be taken into consideration when deciding on the treatment approach.
