Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council
These practice guidelines are based on the Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council's (ADAC) 2004 guidelines, Alcohol and your health; Australian guidelines for Indigenous communities and have been updated to reflect the National Health and Medical Research Council's current guidelines; Australian guidelines: to reduce health risks from drinking alcohol.
They have been developed for use by drug and alcohol workers and health workers, and are written in the 'first person' so that information can be read directly to their clients. The report explains the four main guidelines; reducing the risk of alcohol related-harm over a lifetime, reducing the risk of injury on a single occasion of drinking, children and young people under 18 years of age, and pregnancy and breastfeeding.
It describes the risks of alcohol-related harm for men and women, how other factors can affect people when consuming alcohol (such as taking medications and poly drug use), effects on mental health, and other existing health or social problems. It also provides key terms and definitions, a list of support networks, and pictorial examples of standard drinks.
