Mental health training for workers in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Communities: resource kit (2008)

Description

This resource kit has been developed as a training tool to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers to recognise and respond to clients with mental illnesses and/or alcohol and other drug related issues. The resource kit aims to increase workers' knowledge in four main areas:

• drug and alcohol related issues
• suicide
• grief and loss issues
• stability and referral approaches.

The kit includes:

• a facilitator guide
• a participant guide
• power point slides
• discussion cards
• case studies
• a mentor guide
• assessment tools.

The resource kit satisfies the skills and knowledge required for three units of competency in the HLT33207 Certificate III Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander primary health care qualification.

When to use this resource

The contents of this resource kit should be used by people involved in the training of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers, as well as the health workers themselves. The information in the kit will help health workers to better respond to the needs of clients with mental illnesses and/or alcohol or other drug related issues.
