Outdoor classrooms explores the many benefits a school garden offers when it is creatively used as an outdoor classroom. It offers tips for teachers for practical gardening and learning how best to integrate a garden into a school community. It gives instructions on setting up a garden and suggests ways in which the outdoor classroom can be incorporated into all levels of the school curriculum. There is a lot of emphasis on setting up vegetable gardens which, whilst providing fresh fruit and vegetables, can also teach the children about food issues, economic concerns, human and planetary health, and future sustainability.
There is also useful information on the history of school gardens and their benefits, and some creative ideas that a teacher might like to incorporate into their planning.

Although the book is written for teachers, it could be used by someone who was working with teachers or schools to establish gardens.
Outdoor classrooms can also be used to provide practical tips for setting up community gardens.
